Pet Shelter
Pet Shelter
Pets deserve to feel safe.
Animal abuse often occurs with domestic violence. Abusers harm pets as a tactic for emotional abuse, using an individual’s love for a pet to control them by:
- Harassing pets through yelling or scaring them, throwing objects, or causing physical harm.
- Making threats to harm or kill a pet as a means of intimidation, especially to manipulate children.
- Isolating a person from caring for, socializing with, or having access to their pet.
- Neglecting to feed or care for pets, including restricting money to purchase food or access veterinary care.
- Using a pet as hostage or collateral, including filing for theft or initiating pet custody battles if the survivor leaves with the pet.
- Killing or giving away a pet to inflict emotional pain and remove a source of love.
Over 89% of survivors say their abusers threatened, hurt, or killed their pets as leverage to prevent them from leaving or forcing them to return to care for the animals.
50% of survivors with pets will not consider shelter if they cannot bring their pet along.
We’re here to help.
Noah’s Animal House
The Domestic Violence Resource Center and Noah’s Animal House partnered in 2017 to offer a pet boarding facility for residents of our Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing facilities.
All animals legal in Nevada are accepted including dogs, cats, hamsters, reptiles, and horses. There are no breed restrictions.
Pets are considered as family to many especially when the pets have been a source of unconditional love, emotional support, and protection. By providing care and shelter at no cost, we help survivors focus on the next steps towards a safe and nurturing future and ensure pets get to go home with their family.
Pet Boarding
- Initial intake with Noah’s Animal House staff.
- Pets are quarantined for seven days to confirm or obtain vaccinations, tend to injuries, and monitor overall health. Vaccinations and veterinarian bills are covered.
- Pets are assigned to a space of their own where the owners may set up and decorate to their liking.
- Anything that is needed for a comfortable stay is provided by Noah’s: beds, blankets, toys, bowls, leashes, collars, cages for small animals and birds, tanks for reptiles or fish, and more.
Routine Care
- Meals are provided twice a day. Prescription food or specific allergies are accommodated. Pet owners are allowed to provide food for their pets if they wish.
- Playtime and enrichment multiple times a day. Activities will vary between animals.
Visitation
- Pets can be visited at the shelter location every day between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
About Noah’s Animal House
Noah’s Las Vegas was the first stand-alone shelter in the country dedicated to keeping the entire family united as they transition out of an abusive situation. Noah’s Animal House was founded by Staci Alonso to eliminate one barrier of leaving an abusive relationship and ensure that pets can remain with the families who have fled from a domestic violence situation.
